Definition

Performs skilled level gardening and grounds maintenance work at schools and district facilities.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS :
To be considered for this position, applicants MUST attach the documents listed below to their application at the time of submission.

1) Proof of graduation from High School, GED equivalent or higher. Applicants must upload a photo of the diploma / degree or transcripts (official or unofficial) certifying graduation date or conferred degree.
2) Valid Class C California Driver License. Applicants must upload a photo of their Driver's License
3) Proof of current automobile insurance. Applicants must upload proof of auto insurance.

There is one (1) vacancy, fulltime, 12 months/year

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL LICENSE OR LANGUAGE SKILLS

Education: Completion of formal secondary education (high school diploma or GED) sufficient to possess the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities established for the position.

Experience: One (1) year of full time paid experience, within the last three (3) years, performing gardening and grounds maintenance duties.

SPECIAL LICENSE OR LANGUAGE SKILLS

Possession of a valid class C California Driver's license required. May also be required to obtain and maintain a valid Class B Driver's license, with air brake endorsement. Evidence of proof of current automobile insurance is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of a position with or without reasonable accommodation and without hazard to themselves or others.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties of this class include but are not limited to:

  • Mows and edges lawns;
  • Cuts and prunes shrubs and small trees;
  • Rakes leaves and hoes weeds;
  • Cultivates and waters beds and planted areas;
  • Clears drains and drainage areas; plants and transplants shrubs, bushes and ground cover;
  • Drags, rakes and maintains baseball diamonds and track areas;
  • Mixes and applies chemicals such as insecticides and herbicides;
  • Assists in the installation and repair of irrigation systems;
  • Loads and unloads trucks with trimmings and other items;
  • May operate small and large trucks as required;
  • Operates and maintains hand and power tools such as blowers, weeders, mowers, edgers, hedge trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, etc.;
  • Reports condition of grounds and related problems to supervisor as necessary;
  • Plants and renovates lawns, grounds and athletic fields;
  • Performs other related duties as required.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in planting, cultivating and maintaining lawns, trees, plants, shrubs and grounds;
  • Proper and safe use of chemicals and fertilizers used in grounds maintenance work;
  • Methods and materials used in maintenance and minor repair of irrigation systems;
  • Safe working practices and procedures.
  • Operating a motor vehicle with either manual or automatic transmission;
  • Operating a variety of hand and power tools such as blowers, weeders, mowers, edgers, hedge trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, etc.

Ability to:

  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions in English;
  • Communicate orally in English;
  • Perform skilled level gardening and grounds maintenance work;
  • Plan and organize work; exercise good judgment;
  • Perform heavy physical labor;
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers and others; Maintain sensitivity to ethnic, cultural, religious and sexual differences.

APPOINTMENT

Employees who receive a regular appointment to the class must serve a probationary period of one hundred and thirty (130) days of paid service. During this period, an employee must demonstrate an overall satisfactory level of performance; failure to do so shall result in the employee's termination without right of appeal to the Human Resources Department.

Pay is based on actual hours worked.
Appointed candidate shall start at Step 1. Upon completion of probation and satisfactory evaluation at 6 months, employee shall advance to Step 2. All other step advancement is granted each year after probationary period.
